VIRASAT MUSEUM

WELCOME TO

This museum serves as a living chronicle of the tribal culture, craftsmanship, and daily life of the Bastar region in Chhattisgarh. A lifelong endeavor of the renowned man of letters and cultural scholar Niranjan Mahawar, this collection was meticulously curated between 1960 and 2015. It represents a profound effort to preserve the "cultural soul" of Bastar, built over a span of nearly six decades. Throughout this period, Mahawar maintained direct engagement with the various indigenous communities of the region, gathering artifacts that reflect their daily existence, religious convictions, and artistic legacies. The museum safeguards the creative expressions of several prominent tribes of Bastar, most notably the Muria, Madia, Gond, Dhurwa, Halba, Bhatra, and Dorla. Each artifact in the collection acts as a testament to the sophisticated traditions and enduring heritage of these communities, offering an intimate look at a world where art and life are inextricably linked.
