Bell Metal & Traditional Metalsmithing
The Bell Metal collection is the crowning jewel of this museum, showcasing the world-renowned "Lost Wax" casting technique unique to the Bastar region. Bell metal is a specific alloy composed of copper and tin, distinguished by its notably high tin content. This material is widely recognized for its unique acoustic properties, as it produces a very clear, loud, and resonant sound, which makes it the primary material for crafting bells, plates, and gongs. Beyond these items, bell metal is extensively used for religious and domestic purposes, including the manufacturing of worship bells, plates, bowls, and various musical instruments. The production of these objects typically involves casting and industrial methods. Visually, bell metal can be identified by its shiny and thin appearance, though it is most easily distinguished by its characteristic sound.
